In early December, I received an email from Tripo AI announcing improvements to their Texture and Ultra modes. Ultra mode is their high-detail option — slightly more expensive, but produces better results.
To be honest, I didn't expect much. For a while, Tripo has been a solid but unremarkable choice — good model, nothing special. Just a balanced option among many.
But when I actually tested it... I was amazed.
Face Quality is Now Incredible
Faces have always been the biggest challenge for AI 3D generation. So I went straight to the hard test: I generated Timothée Chalamet from Dune — a character bust with an open mouth.
The result? Stunning. The facial features, the expression, the details — all captured with impressive accuracy from just one image.

Multi-View is Significantly Better
Tripo also improved their multi-view generation. I tested it with Link from Zelda and the difference is clear:
- Better fingers: Multi-view creates almost flawless hands with all five fingers
- Accurate back views: It actually uses the back reference — Link got his shield on the back!
- Fewer texture artifacts: Much cleaner sides compared to single-view generation

Compare the single-view result (with artifacts on sides and broken fingers) to the multi-view version:

Finally: Free Retry (Up to 3 Times)
This should have been added a long time ago, but better late than never: Tripo now offers up to 3 free retries per generated model.
Got weird artifacts? Broken fingers? Just hit retry and you'll likely get a good result without spending additional credits. This is huge for the workflow.

Better Text & Logo Transfer
Accurately transferring text and logos to 3D has always been problematic. It's still not perfect, but the improvement is significant. Logos and text are now transferred much more accurately than before.

Materials Are More Logical
The PBR understanding has improved dramatically. Look at this sci-fi hoodie: metal parts are actually metallic, fabric is fabric, and everything feels natural.

Pro Tip: Texture Your Own Models
If you're a 3D artist, here's something many people don't know: you can upload your own model and use Tripo's texture tab to texture it. If your model is under 1 million polygons (or you optimize it), you can:
- Texture your custom mesh with AI
- Use Magic Brush for touch-ups
- Add PBR maps to already textured models — this is unique!
That last point is huge: you can take a model that already has a color texture and generate PBR maps (roughness, metallic, normal) based on it — without changing the original texture. Tripo is probably the only tool that does this.

The Verdict
This update genuinely surprised me. Tripo went from "solid but unremarkable" to one of the best value options in 3D AI generation.
The face quality is now excellent. Multi-view actually works properly. Materials make sense. And with free retries, you're much more likely to get a good result without burning credits.
Bottom line: If you dismissed Tripo before, it's time to give it another look. The improvements are real, and at 3-4x less than premium alternatives, it's hard to beat the value.
